Interview with Toyz
Every summer, in New York City, theres a celebration that takes place celebrating Hip Hop, in its rawest form. This event is called the Rock Steady Crew Anniversary, where Hip Hop fanatics, from all over the world, come to represent their art form. Graffiti writers, MCs, DJs, poppers, lockers and breakers - an array of artists and would be artists, come in the hope of showing their skills and spreading their knowledge of the underground culture.

On Friday, July 8th at the Crobar on 320 West 28th Street, Rock Steady held its 1vs1 break dancing competition. Hosted by Grandmaster Caz of the Legendary Cold Crush Brothers, Crazy Legs & Kool Ski of Rock Steady Crew with performances by The GZA & Masta Killa of Wu Tang Clan, this battle was well hyped.

This years battle boasted over 80 top dancers from all over the world. Dancers from Europe, California, Korea, Japan and all around the states came to battle it out for the $1000 cash prize and bragging rights. In the end, with unanimous decisions in every round, Toyz, of the Legendary Lionz of Zion, took this year's 29th Anniversary Rock Steady Crew 1vs1 competition against the world's top dancers. Heres a quick interview with Toyz:

What does it feel like being the 29th Anniversary Rock Steady Crew Champ?
I feel good knowing that I'm on top of my game right now... good to know that I'm progressing... other than that.. it's just another jam to me. I feel happy, haha.

What did you do to mentally and physically prepare yourself?
I just reminded myself that I'm here to kill the other dancers. but what with it being a one on one battle, I had to reserve my energy and make all my sets short. I stretched before the battles and I studied the other dancers and how they moved. I studied their weaknesses and their strengths. I applied my own strengths against theirs.

What stood out the most to you, during the event?
The women. There were some lovely asian girls there... but mostly, all the different styles of the dancers. People from Japan and Europe were at the jam dancing and I was really amazed at all these different styles.

How was the competition?
I was a little disappointed over the fact that half the people who signed up didnt show up... I really wanted a challenge for myself. but the competition was still challenging. There was Kid Glyde from Dynamic Rockers and I think ATA or maybe it was someone else from Ghost Crew, all the way from Europe. Everyone was about footwork and dancing, so the battles were a lot of fun and you got to see a variety of styles.

When they called your name out, how was that... how were you feeling at that very second?
I was feeling a bit anxious and a bit nervous. I was really excited to battle but at the same time this was a well known jam and I didnt want to look bad to anyone. All the dancers who entered were good. No one was really whack so I felt very nervous but I knew I had to overcome these feelings and represent my crew to the best of my ability. I was feeling very proud.

Your inspirations?
My big brother, the CAT. haha and the family: AllWays Rockin (AWR) and my crew Lionz of Zion (LOZ). They've always inspired me to better myself and become great.

Congratulations, Toyz!
